Donald Trump files lawsuit to end Michigan recount

President-elect Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit to end the Michigan vote recount before it even begins.

Trump is suing Michigan’s Director of Elections Christopher Thomas and Michigan’s Board of State Canvassers, according to The Hill. In his lawsuit, Trump alleges that if the Michigan recount is allowed to proceed, then he “will continue to suffer irreparable injury.”

But according to the Associated Press, the Michigan board of elections deadlocked on Trump’s request to throw out the recount, which means the recount will likely begin Wednesday unless a federal court intervenes.

Even Michigan’s Attorney General Bill Schuette petitioned the Michigan Supreme Court on Friday asking it to intervene and stop the recount, calling it “frivolous and expensive.” According to the AP, Schuette’s motion is still pending.

The recount effort is being spearheaded by the Green Party’s Jill Stein, who won just one percent of the vote in Michigan. She has also initiated recounts in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Stein says she initiated the recounts to ensure “the integrity and accuracy of the vote.” However, the recounts aren’t expected to change the results of the election in any of the three states, which proved to be pivotal to paving Trump’s path to the White House.

Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton by slightly more than 10,000 votes in the Wolverine State.
