The Patriots passed their biggest test of the season, and now the NFL should be scared

Streeter Lecka/Getty Deflategate is over, and Tom Brady is back with the New England Patriots. And for the rest of the NFL, that means trouble. Much was made about how the Patriots would fare while Brady served his four-game suspension. The idea of staying afloat was frequently mentioned — perhaps the Patriots could go 2-2 and have Brady return to a .500 team still very much in the mix. Instead, Brady is returning to a 3-1 team that won its first three games before, surprisingly, being shut out and looking utterly flat against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Though the Bills won Week 4 decisively, they were also playing a Patriots team helmed by a third-string, rookie quarterback (Jacoby Brissett) playing through a thumb injury that some thought would need surgery. A Week 4 flop aside, the Patriots look like the best team in football. Even in a week when they couldn't get any offense going against the Bills, their defense gave up just 16 points, allowing only three ...

Tiger Woods withdraws from the PGA Championship, to miss entire 2016 season

FARMINGDALE, NY - JUNE 22: Tiger Woods looks on from the 14th tee during the continuation of the final round of the 109th U.S. Open on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park on June 22, 2009 in Farmingdale, New York. Tiger Woods officially withdrew on Tuesday from the 2016 PGA Championship. It marks the first time in his professional career that Woods will miss all four majors in a season. “We have been in contact with Tiger’s agent, Mark Steinberg, and he informed us today that our four-time PGA Champion will be unable to join us at Baltusrol Golf Club next week for the 98th PGA Championship," the PGA of America said in a statement. The  Golf Channel  reported that Woods will not play the rest of the season, receiving an email from Steinberg stating, "Continuing to make progress, but simply not ready for PGA. Will not play in the '15/'16 season and will continue to rehab and work hard to then assess when he starts play for the '16/'17 season....

Alexander Rossi wins Indy 500 in rookie season

A n Indianapolis 500 rookie who only a few months ago lost his drive in Formula One thanks to sport’s extortionate pay driver rates won the 100 th  installment of North America’s most famous race in front of nearly 400,000 people at the Brickyard. Alexander Rossi, the 24-year-old American, had almost no experience of oval racing before taming the fearsome Indianapolis Motor Speedway, winning ahead of a vastly more experienced field. While the rest of the leaders had to pit for fuel near the finish, Rossi and his team Andretti-Herta gambled, almost coasting through the chequered flag with barely any fuel left in the car. Not only is it the first win for a rookie in the Indy 500 for 15 years it also marks an astonishing turnaround for Rossi, a talented victim of Formula One’s pay driver market. Rossi raced in five grand prix for Manor last year, with a best of 12 th at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. "It was close obviously [on fuel], too close for comfort,...

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season Finale Recap: The Final Frontier

The two-part  Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  finale opens with a staggering revelation: Everyone is dead, except for Daisy and Coulson. "I knew someone was gonna go. I just didn't know everyone was gonna go," Daisy says. The duo are apparently stranded on Maveth, the deserted alien planet on which Hive spent thousands of years. Daisy is busily attempting to fix their shuttle so they can get back to Earth, then Coulson drops the second  crazy twist: "Daisy … this is Earth." For a moment, it looks like  Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  will burn it all down — until Daisy wakes up. It was just a nightmare, so we're back to business as usual. Unlike Daisy's nightmare, the season finale plays out almost  exactly  as expected — right down to the character who dies. The scripts for "Absolution" and "Ascension" don't hold any surprises, but the finale still manages to connect on an emotional level. It starts with Daisy, who's struggling th...

Jane the Virgin Season Finale Recap: The Wedding of Jane Gloriana Villanueva

Ivonne Coll as Alba, Gina Rodriquez as Jane, Andrea Navedo as Xo. If I could write this whole recap with emojis, there'd be several varieties of hearts, the running man, the dancing woman, and lots and lots of fires and heart-eyed faces. Those creepy dancing twin girls would also make an appearance. And there'd be a gun. My imaginary emoji recap is appealing because it's incredibly hard to come away from a blockbuster hour of television like "Chapter Forty-Four" and pull together coherent thoughts that aren't just "AHHH!" or "WHY would you get ICE for the DAMN CHAMPAGNE?!" or "OMG FACE OFF MASK!" or "Why isn't all of life just Jane and Rogelio doing that father/daughter dance forever?" But I'll give it a try. Jane the Virgin 's season finale is a narrative fireworks display, a shock-and-awe storytelling spectacular that short-circuits emotional processing centers with blazing confidence. It drops j...
