How to cook a perfect Thanksgiving turkey

Recipe for roast turkey The day before, rub the skin of the bird with oil and sprinkle it inside and out with salt and pepper. Refrigerate it overnight without covering it (this helps crisp the skin). You’ll need a meat thermometer and a pan large enough to hold the bird with space around it. A rack is nice, but not essential. Set the bird on a bed of carrots and onions and roast according to the accompanying chart. Let the turkey sit at room temperature for 45 minutes before roasting, and for 30 minutes after roasting. 1 whole turkey (10 to 25 pounds) Salt and pepper, to taste 2 onions, quartered 2 lemons, quartered 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, or more if needed 1 bunch fresh rosemary, chopped 1 bunch fresh thyme, chopped 1 bunch fresh oregano, chopped 2 carrots, quartered 2 cups water 1.  Set the oven at 325 degrees. P eople wave Turkish flags in Istanbul Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim has said 161 people were killed in the coup attempt against the government, with 2,839 soldiers now detained on suspicion of involvement. Mr Yildirim, speaking outside his Cankaya palace in Ankara and flanked by top general Hulusi Akar who was held during the coup attempt, also described the putsch bid as a "black stain" on Turkish democracy. Turkey's prime minister declares attempted coup is over

Turkey’s prime minister, Binali Yıldırım, has declared an attempted coup by a military faction to be over, calling it a “black stain” on the country’s democracy and pledging harsh punishment for those involved. After a night of chaos and bloodshed, Yıldırım said the government would consider reintroducing the death penalty, which would allow it to execute those behind the coup, the country’s fifth in 60 years. He praised the role played by civilians, the police and the security services in facing down the military. As dawn broke in Turkey on Saturday, confrontations were continuing in some parts of the country. But Turkey’s president, Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan, had been able to re-emerge from a retreat on the coast of the Aegean Sea and fly to Istanbul, where he was greeted by crowds of supporters who overran the airport despite troops having tried to seal it off. By Saturday lunchtime, the death toll stood at 161, with more than 1,440 injured. An earlier statement by the ac...

Turkey's Istanbul attack vengeance will be like 'rain from hell'

The suicide bombing at Turkey's Ataturk Airport  is a symbolic attack at the heart of Istanbul. If ISIS is indeed behind this attack, as the U.S. and Turkey say, this would be a declaration of war. Turkey's vengeance will come down like rain from hell. Thus far, Turkey has avoided engaging ISIS in full war, instead prioritizing its battle against Syria's Assad regime as well as blocking advances by the Syrian Kurds. For Turkey, fighting ISIS as a first order battle could now be unavoidable. Symbolic target In the past, ISIS has carried out attacks in Turkey but this attack eclipses those in scale. Previously ISIS has targeted tourists; this time they're going for the heart of Turkey, and in a brazen attack that has claimed many more lives than previous ISIS attacks. Istanbul's Ataturk Airport is the main entry point for the majority of the more than 30 million people who visit Turkey every year. It's also the hub of Turkish Airlines, the co...
