Predicting The Future: With 'HNDRXX,' Mixtape Culture Infiltrates The Music Industry

The industry has finally seen the light... at least, that's one way to interpret Future's second major-label release in the span of two weeks. That second album,  HNDRXX , is   the "album I always wanted to make," he wrote in an Instagram post and, as its famous features including Rihanna and The Weeknd seem to show, is said to be more radio-ready than last week's  FUTURE . And get this: There are already unconfirmed reports that the Atlanta rapper and his label Epic will follow up this second release with a  third  album. While this windfall means plenty of new Future for fans to digest, it also begs a question: What does this disruption to old release strategies suggest about the present and future of the industry? After years of pushback, the suits in the c-suites may be ready to take their lead from the streets by flooding the market with product. Multiple releases within short windows — traditionally viewed skeptically by an industry w...

Margaret Whitton, the ruthless owner in 'Major League,' dies at 67

Ohio -- Margaret Whitton, who played Cleveland Indians owner Rachel Phelps in the 1989 film "Major League," has died. Whitton died Sunday at her home in Florida from cancer, her husband told the New York Times. She was 67. Major League (9/10) Movie CLIP - We're Contenders Now (1989) HD For the past 25 years, Indians fans have loved to hate Whitton's character in "Major League," a classic sports film that is so cherished in these parts that when Charlie Sheen agreed to appear in character at Game 7 of the World Series it was the lead story on all local newscasts.  Whitton played a former Vegas showgirl who tries to sabotage the Indians season so she can move them to Miami. The team, a mishmash of washed-up veterans, unproven players, an ex-con and maybe even a dead guy, defies the odds and starts winning. At one point, after she's turned off the heat and makes them travel in a prop plane, the team is motivated b...

Penn State's Big Ten title could break the College Football Playoff as we know it

There was no chaos — no crazy final weekend upset. Instead, there were strong performances, a couple of close calls, and an impressive comeback in Indianapolis. So when it comes to the College Football Playoff, Sunday's final rankings should prove to be relatively easy for the selection committee — just push the same top four they had last week. If only it were that simple. For the CFP, chalk in the final four is the worst-case scenario. The selection committee really, really needed some chaos on the final weekend — a reshuffling of the landscape so that there would be no expectation that the final rankings would match last week's. Things did not break its way, and the resumes only became stronger for five of the six teams that had a realistic shot of making the playoff. Alabama is undefeated and smoked Florida by 38 points to win the SEC. Nick Saban's team has to be in the playoff as the No. 1 seed. Clemson, the No. 3 team coming into the weekend, held o...

The Vikings aren't doomed without Teddy Bridgewater

Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports Sure, it dampens some of the high hopes for this team, but they still have the pieces in place to be very competitive in the NFC this year. It’s not all bad news for the Vikings. Teddy Bridgewater has a torn ACL and a dislocated knee, but no nerve damage. In other words, his career isn’t far, over from it, but his season is. The bigger question now is whether the Vikings' season is over, too. Minnesota’s gotten a lot of hype in the offseason. For good reason, after finishing with an 11-5 record last year and a missed field goal away from beating the Seahawks in the playoffs. The defense looks much better. They still have an offense built around Adrian Peterson, and the offensive line got a much needed upgrade. Building a winning team around a good ground game and a strong defense isn’t exactly new. It’s not flashy, and Vikings fans probably aren’t going to find much solace in the fact that the team has been forced into the ...
