Tom Brady retires 'for good' after 23 seasons in NFL

Legendary quarterback and record seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady says he is retiring "for good" after 23 seasons in the NFL. Brady, 45, first announced his retirement on this day last year but  reversed his decision  six weeks later, claiming he had "unfinished business". He won six Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021. Brady's final season ended in the Bucs' 31-14  play-off defeat  last month. How did Brady become the GOAT? "I'm retiring - for good," he said in  an emotional video  posted on social media. "I know the process was a pretty big deal last time, so when I woke up this morning I figured I'd just press record and let you guys know first. "It won't be long-winded. You only get one super-emotional retirement essay and I used mine up last year. "Thank you so much to every single one of you for supporting me - my family, my friends, my team-mates, my competi...

The Patriots passed their biggest test of the season, and now the NFL should be scared

Streeter Lecka/Getty Deflategate is over, and Tom Brady is back with the New England Patriots. And for the rest of the NFL, that means trouble. Much was made about how the Patriots would fare while Brady served his four-game suspension. The idea of staying afloat was frequently mentioned — perhaps the Patriots could go 2-2 and have Brady return to a .500 team still very much in the mix. Instead, Brady is returning to a 3-1 team that won its first three games before, surprisingly, being shut out and looking utterly flat against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. Though the Bills won Week 4 decisively, they were also playing a Patriots team helmed by a third-string, rookie quarterback (Jacoby Brissett) playing through a thumb injury that some thought would need surgery. A Week 4 flop aside, the Patriots look like the best team in football. Even in a week when they couldn't get any offense going against the Bills, their defense gave up just 16 points, allowing only three ...

Former NFL player Darren Sharper sentenced to 18 years in drugging and rape case

The former NFL player Darren Sharper has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in a case in which he was accused of drugging and raping as many as 16 women in four states. Judge Jane Triche Milazzo sentenced Sharper on Thursday. He had pleaded guilty or no-contest in federal court in New Orleans, and state courts in Louisiana, Arizona, California and Nevada to charges arising from the allegations of drugging and raping women. Prosecutors suggested a nine-year prison term for Sharper under a multi-jurisdictional plea deal, but Milazzo rejected it as too lenient in June. The sentence was 15 months short of the maximum. He was also fined $20,000. Sharper pleaded guilty in federal court to three counts of distributing drugs with rape as the aim. He or his friend Brandon Licciardi, a former sheriff’s deputy in neighboring St Bernard Parish, put anti-anxiety drugs or sedatives into women’s drinks so they could rape them, according to a 15-page statement signed as part of ...
