It’s National Dog Day! We Share Our Dogs’ Best and Worst Money Habits

Here's a ruff idea of their spending.   "Cooper’s worst money habit is ripping apart all of his toys the same day he gets them, which makes me spend a lot of money on toys!" —Veronica Quezada, MONEY Audience Engagement Writer   In honor of National Dog Day, we asked MONEY staffers to divulge just how much they spend on their pooches. While we know you can’t put a price on a pup’s unconditional love, the bills do add up. This year, U.S. pet owners are expected to spend $62.75 billion on dogs and other furry, scaly, and feathered friends—a figure that has steadily increased each year, according to the American Pet Products Association. Puppy chow eats up the largest chunk of that total, with Americans expected to spend $23 billion on pet food. Trips to the vet are also costly, too, running pet owners a total of $15.42 billion in 2016. The essential expenses are only part of the total cost; there’s also grooming, boarding, vita...

The Worst Bargains of Amazon Prime Day

Amazon treats its annual Prime Day like a religious holiday for shopping and the greatest thing capitalism hath wrought. In fairness, you can find some sweet, sweet deals amongst the pages of dog food and baby monitors, especially if you’re patient and enjoy spending your day hiding an Amazon webpage from the prying eyes of your boss. But what about the rejects? What about the items that would be better relegated to an “everything must go” sale in a dusty warehouse off of I-95? Don’t worry. There are plenty of those, too!

Independence Day: Resurgence is the summer’s worst movie — and its most boring

At least Jeff Goldblum (left) and Bill Pullman are back. For all the good that does. In the span of my entire existence to date, when was my last chance to have lived a life in which I wouldn’t have to review  Independence Day: Resurgence , the new sequel to the 1996 alien invasion/disaster movie mash-up? Was it when I chose to leave my home for the movie theater, instead of spending the evening watching TV with my wife? Was it a week ago, when Fox announced it  wasn’t screening the film for critics ? Was it two years ago, when I convinced my bosses that Vox should review major movie releases? Was it when I was born? Independence Day: Resurgence  is the worst kind of bad movie: one that seems indifferent about its own existence. Everything about it feels as if it just doesn’t give a shit about the audience watching it or the people who made it or even the fact that it’s unspooling before us. All it cares about is making as much money as possible. So let’...

The Miami Heat are preparing for the worst Chris Bosh outcome

The Miami Heat and Chris Bosh have been stuck at a crossroads for quite some time over an ongoing health issue that forced him to miss the second half of the past two seasons. Bosh believes he's healthy enough to play. Miami's team doctors do not agree. Now, it looks like things are getting more serious than ever before, and the Heat reportedly fear Bosh may have already played his last game in the NBA (via ESPN): There is a fear within the Heat organization that Bosh's condition will prevent him from ever being cleared to play by team doctors, several sources said. It's a result of exhaustive consultations with specialists. Something this big and delicate, the sides have gone deep attempting to understand all the options. It's forced everyone to confront the possibility of Bosh ultimately being forced into a medical retirement. This is a big deal. Bosh just turned 32 and played at an All-Star level before blood clots forced him t...
