The message from H1B visa reforms

Donald Trump’s protectionist stand and H1B visa reform bill carry a message for India that the game has changed, and we better recognize this quickly, writes Ravi Venkatesan The US visa reform bill seeking to double the minimum wage payable to H1B visa holders is only the most recent instance of Donald Trump’s protectionist stand. Photo: Bloomberg America has a protectionist new president who appears to be energetically following through on his election promise to put “America First” and move his country away from the global order based on free trade that has served both America and the world so incredibly well. His rhetoric and early actions are creating an enabling environment for other protectionist-minded CEOs and lawmakers to advance new legislation that aim to narrowly protect American jobs. The new bill proposed by Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren seeking to double the minimum wage payable to H1B visa holders is only the most recent instance of this. It certainly won’t be th

Donald Trump's travel ban fundamentally changes American history

Donald Trump's travel ban on seven Muslim-majority nations marks an early defining moment for his presidency and an inflection point in America's posture toward Islam and the outside world that could resonate in history. The move, which also temporarily bars refugees from entering the US, ushers in the first clash between Trump's populist and proudly politically incorrect leadership style and what his critics see as bedrock values that define the nation. It also represents a pronounced shift in US counter-terrorism tactics and a sharp turn in the debate underpinning national security policy since the 9/11 attacks -- how to best keep Americans safe and battle extremism at home and abroad without alienating Muslims in a way that could foster more radicalism. Meanwhile, legal challenges to Trump's moves herald the start of a constitutional showdown between the president's vision of an expansive activist presidency and the checks and balances built into t

'Stranger Things' Star David Harbour Boldly Rebukes Trumpism in Inspiring SAG Awards Speech

Video Chief Jim Hopper isn't fucking with the latest swath of Trump inhumanity. While accepting the award for Outstanding Performance in an Ensemble in a Drama Series at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild ceremony, David Harbour brought the damn house down with a hyped AF speech that was  exactly  the rallying cry we all needed before diving into this surely exhausting week. "In light of all that's going on in the world today, it's difficult to celebrate the already celebrated  Stranger Things ," Harbour said when accepting the award alongside his  Stranger Things  co-stars. "But this award from you, who take your craft seriously and earnestly believe like me that great acting can change the world, is a call to arms from our fellow craftsmen and women to go deeper, and through our art to battle against fear, self-centeredness, and exclusivity of our predominantly narcissistic culture." Then, Harbour kicked it up a notch. "And

Google celebrates Fred Korematsu, who fought against Japanese internment

Google is celebrating civil rights leader Fred Korematsu with its Google Doodle today, on the day that would’ve marked his 98th birthday. Korematsu was born in Oakland, to Japanese immigrants parents, and went into hiding when then U.S. President Roosevelt issued its executive order to people of Japanese descent living in the U.S. into internment camps. Korematsu went into hiding instead of entering a camp voluntarily, and was arrested in 1942 for fleeing the order. He was then imprisoned in a camp in Utah until the end of the war. Korematsu was later issued the Medal of Freedom by Bill Clinton, and following the events of September 11, he spoke out about how the U.S. should not go down the same path with those of Middle-Eastern descent as it did with people of Japanese heritage during WWII. Korematsu would also file amicus briefs in court cases involving detainees at Guantanamo Bay who were arguing against wrongful and prolonged unlawful detainment, arguing that the restrict

Roger Federer savors No. 18 because success can be fleeting

CLOSE Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal in five sets at the Australian Open final, adding to what's been an amazing history between these two competitors MELBOURNE — When a champion experiences the best his sport has to offer a record 18 times, there tends to be an understanding of how fleeting those moments of pure joy can be in the grand scheme of life. So, when experiencing a great victory, a champion tries to store the grand  achievement, in slow motion, in his memory bank. At least that is how 35-year-old  Roger Federer  suggests he handles the milestones of his life, including his latest successful quest of glory — a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over 30-year-old  Rafael Nadal , his oldest rival in the game, at the Australian Open on Sunday. This latest victory enabled Federer to increase his record of Grand Slam titles — the biggest prize in tennis — to an impressive 18. “You don’t know if these
