Doom Is Here: 6 Reasons to Be Excited

It has been quite some time, but Doom is back. Given how this franchise birthed the modern first-person shooter—a genre which has dominated the industry for nearly a decade—it's only right that Doom returns to be the king of FPS games once again.
To some, the FPS genre has lost its way over the years. Instead of large worlds filled with aggressive enemies, we now have games that funnel players down corridors where enemies essentially await fire. Doom, on the other hand, will contain large levels where players have to rely on their shooting skills in order to survive. This will be a shooter fan's shooting game through and through. Here's why you should consider picking it up.
1. Back to Basics
While Doom 3 was a great game, its emphasis on survival-horror made it feel completely different from the original titles. This new Doom brings the series back to basics with large, intricately designed levels filled with hundreds of evil monsters to kill.
Though this is a current-gen game and is designed to appeal to modern audiences, it will still retain the classic feel of the series. Everything from the weapons to enemies to level design is meant to give modern players the same feelings that those who played the original games felt.

2. Classic Hidden Levels
Hidden within each level will be doors that lead to areas from the original Doom 1 and 2. These locations will retain the classic pixelated look and music of those games, though the player character and enemies will keep their modern design. This homage to the classic series will no doubt make veterans of the originals very happy. It's a great nod to the original games, and a unique way to show how far game graphics have evolved over the past 20 years.
3. Fast Pace
One of the great things about the old Doom games was how fast-paced they were. If you wanted to survive, you had to let instinct take over and not overthink any given situation. This Doom promises to bring back twitch-based gameplay in a big way. Enemies will not give you a chance to breathe, so you'll have to constantly be in motion in order to succeed.

4. Snapmap and Weapon Customization
Mods are a big thing for the Doom community, but it's something that only the PC crowd has enjoyed. Now, console fans can get in on some sweet modding action thanks to the Snapmap feature that lets users create levels from scratch. Players will be able to fill their custom levels with enemies of their choosing and program their behavior. Players will be able to upload their levels and play in each other's creations.

5. Multiplayer
Another way for players to express themselves is through weapon customization. Each gun can be modified to suit a player's style. For example, a shotgun can be modded so that it can be used at mid-range and not just be an up-close-and-personal type of weapon. Though players shouldn't expect the same level of weapon customization offered by other games, it will still be enough to allow a fair bit of experimentation to see what weapon mods suit them best.
Speaking about online features, we can't forget to mention Doom's multiplayer mode. It should come as no surprise that this game's MP is very reminiscent of Quake, which is another Bethesda property. While this MP will have perks and some other modern mechanics, it will be very much focused on skill and not let players rely too much on power ups. The Doom multiplayer beta was met with generally positive response, especially from the younger crowd, so expect this mode to be most appealing to a whole new generation of Doom-heads.
6. Brutality
The original Doom was notorious for the amount of violence it contained and this new game will be no different. Since it is 2016, the gore factor had to be raised exponentially in order for this game to be as shocking as the first Doom. Thanks to the new glory kills, which let you literally tear enemies apart with your bare hands, this game promises to be one of the most violent titles released this year. Those with weak constitutions should steer clear of this one.

Frank Ocean new album: How to listen and stream Boys Don’t Cry when it drops

After two missed release dates a year apart and a confusing decoy of a “live stream” video, Frank Ocean is set to finally release his second album,  Boys Don’t Cry , on Friday 5 August. It will be launched through an exclusive deal with Apple Music, according to the  New York Times , who cite a ‘person with knowledge of the release plans’. If indeed this is the case (and it would make sense, that live stream has an Apple watermark), it means you’ll need to sign up for Apple Music to listen to the  Channel Orange  follow-up, which costs £9.99 a month (£4.99 for students through Apple’s UNiDAYS promotion). You might want to turn off auto-renewal off though (Apple Music app > profile icon > View Apple ID. > Subscriptions > Manage > switch Auto-Renewal off), if you’re the kind of person who, like me, is liable to forget that you’ve signed up for the service indefinitely.
