The Mets are putting the finishing touches on a trade for Reds slugger Jay Bruce on deadline day, The Post’s Joel Sherman reports, in an attempt to inject life into a woeful offense and flagging playoff bid.
The Mets will send former first-round pick Brandon Nimmo and two lower-level prospects to Cincinnati.
Bruce, 29, is a potent bat who isn’t an ideal positional fit in the Mets’ outfield mix: yet another lefty swinger who is best suited to the corner outfield. Bruce would play right field with Yoenis Cespedes (when healthy) in left and Curtis Granderson and Michael Conforto dividing the time in center.
The Texas native has 25 home runs and 80 RBIs this season playing his home games in hitter-friendly Great American Ball Park. He has a slash line of .265/.316/.559.
Bruce is under control for 2017 with a team option worth $13 million.
