Severe weather rolls through Houston area on President's Day

HOUSTON — It was a wet, messy rush hour commute Monday morning as heavy storms moved throughout the Houston area. A Flash Flood Watch which was expected to remain in effect until 4 p.m. expired early as heavy rain moved out faster than expected. Light to moderate showers are expected throughout the remainder of the day. The heaviest rainfall happened between 6 and 9 a.m., and will start to taper off by lunchtime. There will be dry and sunny skies on Tuesday.

Former NFL player Darren Sharper sentenced to 18 years in drugging and rape case

The former NFL player Darren Sharper has been sentenced to 18 years in prison in a case in which he was accused of drugging and raping as many as 16 women in four states. Judge Jane Triche Milazzo sentenced Sharper on Thursday. He had pleaded guilty or no-contest in federal court in New Orleans, and state courts in Louisiana, Arizona, California and Nevada to charges arising from the allegations of drugging and raping women. Prosecutors suggested a nine-year prison term for Sharper under a multi-jurisdictional plea deal, but Milazzo rejected it as too lenient in June. The sentence was 15 months short of the maximum. He was also fined $20,000. Sharper pleaded guilty in federal court to three counts of distributing drugs with rape as the aim. He transformed digital computing and electronic communication Claude Shannon, nicknamed “the father of information theory” for his work on digital computing and electronic communication, was also ajuggling unicyclist who would have turned 100 on Saturday. To mark his birthday and his achievements, Saturday’s Google Doodle honored Shannon, depicting him juggling a set of ones and zeroes, the numbers he used to transform computing after learning they could be used to represent words, pictures, videos and more.
