The Brooklyn outfit eased into their headlining set with standards like "I Can Change," "Tribulations" and "You Wanted a Hit," showing little rust since their last run of tour dates in 2011. The band soon silenced all side conversations with an unimpeachable segue from the somber and haunting "Someone Great" into a reference-laden rendition of "Losing My Edge."A reunited LCD Soundsystem closed out Coachella's first day tonight (April 15), enthralling their Indio, Calif. audience with a strong main stage performance that featured a standout series of fan favorites.
Never ones to rest on their laurels, Murphy and co. even updated their classics to fit a new era -- notably changing a line in "Losing My Edge" to reflect bands trading in their turntables for Ableton Live setups, and deftly inserting a portion of fellow reunited headliner Guns n Roses' "November Rain" into a stirring take of "New York I Love You."
"The last time we played here, Jay-Z played after us and we were honored because we really like him," offered Murphy prior to the former. "But tonight he's not here and we're sorry."
Musing that they had successfully cut down on talking in order to fit more songs into their set, the band drew swelling cheers for analog powerhouse "Dance Yrself Clean" after the raw confessional of "New York I Love You."
"I don't know if that's a win for you, but it's a win for me," Murphy cracked.
"Two more," Murphy said wearily, than launched into a memorable cover of David Bowie's "Heroes" in an emotional homage to the late musician.
Generational anthem "All My Friends" followed to the excitement (but no surprise) of true fans. Bathed in apocalyptic red lights, James Murphy delivered the song's resonant refrain "Where are your friends tonight?" in increasingly emphatic tones before the stage went dark.
