Since the release of her most recent album Britney Jean, Britney Spears has proven willing to maintain a consistent public presence—not to mention a certain degree ofcontroversy—over the last few years, between her bizarre celebrity dust-ups, fun TV cameos, and collaborations with musical pioneers. Now, four months after announcing the beginning stages of a new studio album, Spears has given fans a taste of what’s to come with the release of her new single “Make Me.”
The song is a sample of what will be Spears’ ninth solo album over a professional singing career of nearly 20 years. It features rapper G-Eazy for a guest verse—which complements Spears’ sound with seductive ease—and has swiftly moved to the top of the iTunes chart. While “Make Me” does not necessarily feature Spears at her energetic, fast-paced best, it does represent a return to form in its rhythm and in the singer’s sultry vocal command.
