Rock-rap-pop band Twenty One Pilots made its Saturday Night Live debut during the October 8 episode — the latest proof of its unlikely pop stardom.
Twenty One Pilots performed “Ride,” off last year’s Blurryface, and “Heathens,” off the Suicide Squad soundtrack. Longtime fans might have missed breakthrough hit “Stressed Out,” though this set list made sense: Last month those songs were simultaneously in the top five, making Twenty One Pilots only the third act to achieve this after Elvis Presley and the Beatles.
Still, to see Twenty One Pilots on this national stage was surreal, even after its performance with A$AP Rocky at the MTV Video Music Awards. The band didn’t hold back on the theatrics, either; reliably, frontman Tyler Joseph broke into alter ego Blurryface, who “appears” when Tyler covers his face with his black-painted hands.
